Food For Thought

It has been said that one should never discuss religion or politics for fear that a quarrel might break out. These two concepts contain the issue of life and eternity so one would be unwise to avoid them but nonetheless disagreements will still arise. Scripture says “Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.” , Proverbs 17:14 (NIV). Arguing just to argue is reckless but avoiding a subject, even though it may invoke a disagreement, is foolish. The founding fathers of this country argued for weeks when they met to draft the constitution. After all was said and done a great nation was born. Knowing when to speak and when to be silent requires wisdom. Ecclesiastes tells us there is “…a time to be silent and a time to speak.” (NIV). To simply avoid conversation because a dispute might occur can adversely affect the lives of others. We should ask God for wisdom, patience and understanding when tackling difficult subjects. Something to think about…
