Food For Thought

Individuals that slander, gossip or become what is known as a whisperer in the church are labeled in the book of proverbs as perverse. Proverbs 16:28 reads, “A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends.” (NIV). Such behavior is out of step with the calling placed on the life of a believer. As Christians we should always seek to build others up and provide encouragement whenever possible. While a gossip is considered untrustworthy and often the catalyst that breaks up relationships, a Christian must be able to keep a confidence and encourage unity. It is difficult to turn away from someone who gossips because we are told in Proverbs 18:8 that, “The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts.”(NIV) In short, the battle between the flesh and the spirit, good and evil, wickedness and righteous often originates with the tongue and resides in the ears. As followers of Jesus we would do well to keep a check on both. Something to think about…
