Food For Thought

The Bible instructs us on revenge in Romans 12:19 “Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord.” (NIV). When revenge is sought, though sweet to the sinful nature, it brings an indulgence that tears down character. Thought must be given and energy must be expended in order to bring harm to those who have harmed us. This would violate the directive given in Phil 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-- if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-- think about such things (NIV). It also infringes upon the second and greatest commandment found in Matthew 22:39 to love your neighbor as yourself. Finally, we are encouraged in Philippians 2:3 to “… consider others better than yourselves.” (NIV). While it is painful to endure wrong without taking revenge, the reward is becoming the disciple that Jesus desires. Something to think about…
