Food For Thought

Children and grandchildren are precious gifts from God. The word has much to say concerning discipline and instruction for these little ones. In Proverbs 29:15 we are told “The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.”(NIV). It is implicit in scripture that parents have been given the responsibility of guiding their offspring. This is clear in Proverbs 1:8 when is says, “Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching.” (NIV). The Israelites were instructed to watch themselves closely, “so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” Deuteronomy 4:9 (NIV). Directing the next generation through discipline and instruction is a God given responsibility. If we neglect to do this we are told in Proverbs 13:24 that we actually hate our children. Although it can be difficult carrying out the task of training up our children in the ways of the Lord it carries with it an eternal reward, having our kids with us eternally. Something to think about…
